Day-by-Day Itinerary Tanzania Itinerary 3 Days Safari — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Hereโ€™s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Tarangire National Park + Karatu Overnight

Day 1 features an early drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for a full game drive viewing massive elephant herds, followed by an evening drive to Eileen’s Trees Inn.

We begin our journey bright and early at 07:30 AM, departing directly from your hotel in Arusha. The road points southwest, taking us through open Maasai plains where pastoralists lead their cattle across the grasslands. The two-hour drive on smooth tarmac flies by as our guide introduces you to the rich history and beautiful cultures of our home country. Before you know it, the iconic silhouette of giant baobab trees welcomes us to the gate of Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire is a spectacular wilderness that often surprises our guests. It is famous for hosting one of the largest concentrations of elephants on the entire African continent. During the dry months, the Tarangire River becomes a golden magnet for thousands of animals, as it provides the only permanent water source for miles around. You will watch families of over fifty elephants digging in the sandy riverbeds or splashing playfully in the shallow pools.

Our custom 4×4 safari vehicles feature pop-up roofs, allowing you to stand up safely and enjoy completely unobstructed views of the scenery. As we navigate the network of tracks along the riverbanks, keep your eyes scanning the lower limbs of the sausage trees. Tarangire is excellent territory for spotting leopards sleeping quietly on large branches, their spotted coats blending perfectly into the shifting shadows.

Around midday, we drive up to a scenic, elevated picnic spot overlooking the river loop. Here, you can unpack your fresh lunch box while watching zebras and wildebeests brave the waters below, constantly staying alert for any hidden crocodiles. It is a thrilling experience to dine surrounded by the sights and wild sounds of nature.

As the afternoon sun starts to soften and turn a beautiful golden hue, we begin a slow game drive back toward the park gate. We then head north, climbing up the majestic Great Rift Valley escarpment. The air grows cooler and crisper as we reach the fertile green highlands of Karatu. We arrive at Eileen’s Trees Inn just in time to check into your beautiful garden bungalow, wash off the safari dust, and enjoy a delicious, freshly cooked dinner next to the lounge fireplace.

Local Pro-Tip for Tarangire Tell your driver to head deep toward the Silale Swamp early in the afternoon. While most day-trippers stay near the main gate, the swamp acts as a giant sponge that draws large herds of buffalos and elephants out into the open waters, providing some of the most dramatic photography opportunities in East Africa.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Tarangire National Park
  • Game drive in Tarangire National Park

Day 2: The Ngorongoro Crater โ€” Searching for the Big Five

Day 2 explores the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater floor, offering unparalleled opportunities to view the complete Big Five, including rare black rhinos, before returning to Karatu for dinner.

We highly recommend waking up at 06:00 AM to catch the early light. After a hot breakfast at the lodge, we make the short fifteen-minute drive to the main Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. From there, the road ascends steeply through a dense, mist-shrouded montane forest until we suddenly reach the breathtaking rim of the crater. Standing at the viewpoint, looking down into a vast volcanic caldera that spans over twenty kilometers across, is a moment that will stay with you forever.

We descend down the steep, narrow track cut into the crater wall, dropping six hundred meters down to the flat grasslands below. Because the walls create a natural barrier, over twenty-five thousand large mammals live permanently inside this ancient bowl. This creates an incredibly dense wildlife arena where you can easily spot lions, spotted hyenas, and golden jackals all interacting within a single morning glance.

Our main mission on the crater floor is tracking the legendary black rhino. These magnificent, critically endangered creatures find sanctuary in the open short-grass plains and the dense Lerai Forest. Our eagle-eyed guides know their favorite feeding spots and will position our vehicle perfectly, allowing you to watch these rare giants moving peacefully through the morning mist.

By lunchtime, we make our way to the Ngoitokitok Springs picnic site. Here, you can stretch your legs on the green lawns next to a crystal-clear pool filled with splashing hippos. Just watch out for the yellow-billed kites soaring overheadโ€”they are notorious for diving down to snatch delicious bites straight from unsuspecting hands!

The afternoon brings more incredible wildlife viewing as we drive across the white shores of Lake Magadi. The alkaline water is often rimmed with thousands of pink lesser flamingos, making it look like a bright line of fire along the lake edge. We will also search for the massive elephant bulls that carry some of the largest tusks left in Africa, before climbing back up the crater walls. We head back down to Karatu, where the welcoming staff at Eileen’s Trees Inn will have hot tea and cold drinks waiting for your return.

Local Pro-Tip for Ngorongoro The crater floor can get surprisingly chilly in the early morning because the high rim blocks out the warm sun. Wear layers, including a fleece jacket and a light scarf, which you can easily remove by midday when the sun sits directly overhead in the caldera

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Early morning descent into Ngorongoro Crater
  • Full-day Ngorongoro Crater safari

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park + Return to Arusha

Day 3 explores Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its dense groundwater forest, large baboon troops, and tree-climbing lions, before a smooth afternoon drive back to Arusha town.

On our final morning, we enjoy a relaxed breakfast before packing our bags and driving down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park. This park offers a striking contrast to the previous two days. The entrance takes us directly into a lush, jungle-like groundwater forest fed by underground springs rising from the Rift Valley wall. The canopy rings out with the loud calls of hornbills and blue monkeys playing high in the trees.

Lake Manyara is a true paradise for bird lovers, hosting over four hundred different bird species. As we emerge from the dense trees onto the wide floodplains, the landscape opens up to reveal a glittering lake that covers two-thirds of the park. You will see thousands of pink birds filtering the water alongside elegant storks, pelicans, and majestic African fish eagles perched on dead branches.

This park is also famous for its unique population of tree-climbing lions. While lions normally stay firmly on the ground, the prides here have developed a habit of lounge-sleeping high up on the thick limbs of acacia and sycamore fig trees. Our guides will search the branches diligently, looking for a dangling tail or paw that reveals a sleeping cat escaping the heat of the ground.

We will also pass through the iconic Hippo Pool at the northern end of the lake, where huge pods of hippos wallow in the mud. After a lovely final lunch in the shade of the park’s baobabs, we start our return drive back to Arusha. We will arrive in town by late afternoon, giving you plenty of time to catch your international flight home or transfer to your next beach destination.

Local Pro-Tip for Lake Manyara Keep a close eye on the large troops of olive baboons near the entrance forest. They are highly social and very active. If you sit quietly without moving the vehicle, you can watch amazing behaviors like mothers grooming their tiny babies and young juveniles wrestling playfully right on the road tracks.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Lake Manyara National Park
  • Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park
